About Greenway
National Register of Historic Places, Virginia Landmarks Register
Greenway was built in 1776 for Judge John Tyler, 15th governor of Virginia from 1808-1811. The dormered residence and its cluster of outbuildings are typical of numerous lesser plantation houses erected in Virginia during the second half of the 18th century. Judge Tyler and his wife, Mary Marot (Armistead), had eight children, including future president John Tyler, born here on March 29, 1790. After his marriage to Letitia Christian on March 29, 1813 they resided at Woodburn nearby. Tyler returned in 1821 and made Greenway his home during his own tenure as governor from 1825-1827. Greenway was sold in 1829 but has survived the centuries without significant alteration.
Tyler Family Cemetery
Judge John Tyler died at Greenway on January 6, 1813, and is buried in the cemetery on the property. His daughter, Martha Jefferson Tyler Waggaman, and son-in-law, Thomas Ennalls Waggaman, are also buried here. Plans for ground-penetrating radar exploration and potential restoration of the cemetery are in early stages.
Greenway is privately owned. Thank you to resident Donald Elmore for opening his home.
