About the event
Gather at President Tyler’s gravesite on his 236th birthday to reflect on his life and legacy. This act of remembrance has been a tradition honoring deceased United States presidents since the 1960’s and continues to unite family members.
About Hollywood Cemetery
Designed in 1847 by landscape architect John Notman of Philadelphia as a “rural” style garden cemetery and located on the banks of the James River, the cemetery spans 135 acres of hills and valleys. Notman’s design left trees and other plants untouched in the landscape and the cemetery’s natural beauty has earned it recognition as a registered arboretum. Presidents Circle serves as the final resting place for the 5th and 10th presidents of the United States, James Monroe and John Tyler. In 1968, James Monroe's Gothic Revival cast iron canopy, known as "the Birdcage", was registered as a National Historic Landmark by the National Park Service. One of the most historic and beautiful cemeteries in the United States, Hollywood Cemetery is the final resting place of many notable individuals and is a living story in stone, iron and landscape.
Thank you to the United States Army, Fort Lee, for providing a wreath to honor President Tyler on his birthday, and to The Society of the War of 1812 in Virginia for commemorating his service.
